Keywords Count With Google And They Have The Best Free Tool For Them!
There are a number of great keyword tools available for a price, there are also several excellent keyword tools available free. The Google AdWords Keyword Tool is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to rapidly pull together several hundred highly relevant keywords. It's really designed to be used by AdWords PPC advertisers, but is also available to anyone doing keyword research. There is one drawback to this tool in that that Google doesn't provide any real numbers for their search volume, relying instead on green bars designed to give you a general estimate of whether the keyword is high-traffic or not. These same bars are used to estimate advertiser competition.
For example, when you use Google to find out the keyword search volume for luggage shops, it shows you that the main phrase luggage shops will produce a moderate amount of search traffic but faces stiff competition. On the other hand, the search designer luggage may be a better keyword to target. Even though it will produce a smaller amount of traffic it won't face as much competition. Keywords which face stiff competition in the paid results also face stiff competition in the organic results, so these estimates can apply regardless of whether you're targeting paid or natural search traffic.
The cost and position estimate feature can be a good way to research potential niches where you might make a nice profit showing AdSense ads if you are an AS publisher. Enter a fairly high bid like $4.00 and you'll usually be able to see what sites are paying to rank in the top spots.
If you see lots of keywords costing $2.00 or more per click, you've likely found a nice high-paying niche to monetize with AdSense. Unfortunately, if the top spot for most keywords is less than a dollar, then you aren't likely to see much profit if anyone clicks on your AdSense ad.
On the flip-side, if you're an AdWords advertiser then you might be able to find some very low-cost clicks. The Google AdWords Keywords Tool also has perhaps the easiest way to directly download the generated keywords, compared to any of the other free keyword tools available. To download your keyword list you simply click the Add>> link next to the keyword you want, or click Add all…>> to add all your generated keywords.
Then just click the Download all keywords: text link to download them all to your computer as a text file.
You can also download keywords as a .csv file or Excel file for easy manipulation. Once you've created an initial list of keywords, you should go back over them and pick out the most relevant ones to run through the Google Keyword Tool again. This will give you a whole new list of highly targeted keywords.
Also, be sure to check the use the synonyms box. That will generate alternative keywords, such as children if you enter kids, and so on. This allows you to generate a much more comprehensive list. One of our favorite features of the Google AdWords Keyword Tool is called Site-Related Keywords. This feature takes much of the guess work out of finding any existing site's keyword list. Simply enter a URL and Google will extract as many useful keywords from those pages as they can. To find relevant pages, just search for the keyword in Google and enter the top 10 pages returned into the tool. You can take this tool to the next level, run your search over on Google Mobile Search so that you just get links to the top search results.
